Oliver has spent his whole career designing cars and what an incredible career it’s been. He started his working life as an engineering apprentice at Jaguar Cars before spending a further five years there as a staff designer. In 1971 he joined Lotus Cars as the Design Manager responsible for styling, body engineering and aerodynamics and was a key part of the team that created the Elite and Esprit. In 1975 he transferred to Colin Chapman's luxury boat company JCL Marine designing luxury motor yachts. After a short spell at TVR he returned to Lotus in 1980 to play a major role in the joint project with Toyota that produced a revised Eclat and later the Excel. He also styled the subsequently stillborn M90 sports car project. A later spell at Hethel followed on from this until he set up his own consultancy in Norfolk in 1998. Oliver is without doubt one of Britain’s leading automotive designers and his career has spanned the world working with such names as Giugiaro, ItalDesign, General Motors and Toyota. He recounts his experiences with many previously untold stories in a typically outspoken and forthright yet humorous manner and there’s also plenty of historical engineering drawings and photographs. This compelling and absorbing book gives a unique insight into being a top designer and innovator in the automotive business and is thoroughly recommended reading.

B 6 The Accidental Shopkeeper

An amusing amble through the life of Patrick Limming. (A long standing Club Lotus member). From boyhood adventures to the realities of 21st century adulthood.
His story will chime with readers born in the fifties bringing back as it does memories of a different world which his vivid description of small town Lincolnshire brings to life. His recounting of his early years and his father’s first foray into shop keeping was particularly amusing and heartfelt.
Whilst the book traces Patrick’s progress through the various stages of his life and the life of the family shop with its ups and downs, evolving slowly and at times reluctantly to the changing times it also reflects the story of rural market towns and their decline throughout the country. This may sound sobering and boring but the lightness of touch and humour with which it is written makes it an easy read.
Throughout it all there is a common Lotus theme: Patrick has loved them from early adolescence until today. Early dreams turn into the reality of ownership, with all its pain and pleasure - from the Elan, through Esprit to the Elise. Tempted by Italian models he stayed faithful and enjoyed a long and happy relationship with Lotus. (Oh and his wife Alice).

This is a revised and enlarged Mk2 version of the book Gordon originally wrote 10 years ago after restoring a +2 and a Sprint. Certainly both of these cars have drawn much favourable attention at shows and have also covered many miles so Gordon obviously knows what he’s talking about. If you’re working on an Elan this would be a useful addition to your library.
