The Lotus 49 F1 car was designed by Colin Chapman and Maurice Philippe for the 1967 F1 season. It was the first car to use the legendary Cosworth DFV engine. The car was designed around the DFV engine, and was highly significant in being the first successful Formula One car to feature the engine as a structural member. The Lotus 49 was also significant in being the first F1 car to feature aerodynamic wings, and was the first car to feature commercial sponsorship, in the form of the famous red, gold and white Gold Leaf Team Lotus colours. Jim Clark famously won on the car's debut at Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix in 1967, and it would also provide him with the last grand prix win of his career in 1968, before Graham Hill went on to win the 1968 F1 World Championship using the car. This Manual provides a fascinating insight into the design, evolution, operation, maintenance and restoration of the Lotus 49.

In 1960, Chapman decided to start with a clean sheet of paper, assessing the basic requirements for a contemporary Formula 1 car, and identifying how to achieve them in the most straightforward, uncomplicated way. The result was one of Chapman s greatest creations the Lotus 18 a trendsetting, rear-engined car that was to set new performance standards from the outset.

Oliver has spent his whole career designing cars and what an incredible career it’s been. He started his working life as an engineering apprentice at Jaguar Cars before spending a further five years there as a staff designer. In 1971 he joined Lotus Cars as the Design Manager responsible for styling, body engineering and aerodynamics and was a key part of the team that created the Elite and Esprit. In 1975 he transferred to Colin Chapman's luxury boat company JCL Marine designing luxury motor yachts. After a short spell at TVR he returned to Lotus in 1980 to play a major role in the joint project with Toyota that produced a revised Eclat and later the Excel. He also styled the subsequently stillborn M90 sports car project. A later spell at Hethel followed on from this until he set up his own consultancy in Norfolk in 1998. Oliver is without doubt one of Britain’s leading automotive designers and his career has spanned the world working with such names as Giugiaro, ItalDesign, General Motors and Toyota. He recounts his experiences with many previously untold stories in a typically outspoken and forthright yet humorous manner and there’s also plenty of historical engineering drawings and photographs. This compelling and absorbing book gives a unique insight into being a top designer and innovator in the automotive business and is thoroughly recommended reading.
